Botany Walk: Alpine Lakes and Flowers in Tuolumne Meadows August 29-30

Indulge in the delights of Tuolumne Meadow's alpine lakes and flowers this summer with one of Yosemite's most knowledgeable naturalist guides, Suzanne Swedo. You'll wander through miniature alpine gardens where flowers flourish despite extreme conditions and a short growing season. You'll seek out some oddities like steers heads, rare buckwheats and mountain sorrel that occur in the high mountains around the world. Admire the alpine versions of favorite flowers like columbines, lupines and paintbrushes that occur here in colors and habits different from their lower elevation relatives. Learn how the colorful metamorphic rocks on the Sierra crest contrast with the gray granites of the rest of Yosemite and how this unique geology influences the flora. You'll also catch a glimpse of high country creatures, such as pikas, marmots, mountain bluebirds and rosy finches. The guided walk will cover 2-3 miles at high altitude. Each person will need to bring $8 cash for the boat ride across Saddlebag Lake. The Experience Package includes camping at Tuolumne Meadows Campground in Tuolumne Meadows from Aug 28-31. Camping is not required to participate. Park entry is also included, as needed. Upgrade your accommodations to stay at Tuolumne Lodge from Aug 28-31, available up to 45 days prior to your trip. Information about upgrading your package will be emailed after you sign up. Hiking: Moderate; about 3 miles total Elevation: 8,600' Experience Package: $149 Naturalist Guide: Suzanne Swedo
