Backpack to Lyell Glacier: Last of its Kind August 13-16, 2015
Experience a glacier in Yosemite's own backyard during this unforgettable guided backcountry adventure with a veteran Yosemite naturalist! Enjoy a rare opportunity to backpack to Lyell Glacier, located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, on Yosemite's highest peak. Your reward for climbing steep rock and braving strong wind and sun at high elevation, will be to set foot on a glacier - one that is shrinking and may not be here for future generations.
This advanced backpack adventure kicks off with a Thursday evening get-together in Tuolumne Meadows Campground. On Friday morning, head off from Tuolumne Meadows and transition to an off-trail climb to set up basecamp between 10,000' and 11,000' elevation. On the second day, experience the unique and thrilling feeling of hiking on glacial ice before you return to basecamp. On Sunday, hike approximately 10 miles back to Tuolumne Meadows, returning at approximately 5 pm. This trip is recommended for fit, experienced backpackers, so come prepared for a challenge.
The Experience Package includes camping before and after at Tuolumne Meadows Campground in Tuolumne Meadows on Aug 13 & 16. Camping before and after the trip is not required to participate.
