This beautiful picture book features a classic Yosemite legend. All the animal people of the village search vainly for missing bear cubs, until Red-Tailed Hawk has located them high atop a huge granite rock on Yosemite Valley's rim. Hoping to rescue the cubs, each of the animals in turn tries to scale the vertical wall, but each fails. The fate of the young bears rests with tiny Measuring Worm, who is the last to attempt to climb the hulking rock. In this story about the value of all beings, the nature of courage and other themes, young readers will discover how the bear cubs are saved, learn the traditional Miwok tale of how a rock grew to become one of Yosemite's most famous landmarks, and come to realize that being a hero has very little to do with one's size. Includes notes about the native Miwok people, related reading, and Internet resources for teachers.
